I wish someone had pulled me aside in high school and told me that being a balloon twister was a real career path. While college was good for me, and having a degree is beneficial, I spent too many years doing things that never felt right and wondering what my true calling was. Then I discovered balloons. I love providing event entertainment by twisting on-site for both kids and adults alike (one of my favorite gigs was actually for a 90-year-old great-grandpa). I also enjoy balloon decoration—transforming standard decor into something special with fun, large twists. While I twist, I talk. I talk a lot. A LOT. It goes with the territory, which means I get asked lots of questions! Here are some of the most frequently asked: How long have you been doing this? I've been twisting balloons since 2015. How did I learn to do this? (Also see 'Why did you learn to do this?') My daughter had a safari-themed 10th birthday party and wanted balloon animals. It never occurred to me that I could actually hire someone for balloon decoration. She had a book and one of those terrible little kits. (Don't ever judge your abilities by those—they're awful. Contact me if you want to give it a try; I’ll provide a list of good materials.) Not surprisingly, the kit was disappointing, and the balloons were dull. So, to the internet I went! There, I learned which balloons to use and started watching every YouTube video I could find. Yes, I truly learned at YouTube University. I found artists I admired, joined Facebook groups, and took online classes, and now I count those admired artists among my friends. I learned so YOU don't have to! Are my hands tired? At any given time, probably not. Unless I twist for 8 hours a day, 2 to 3 days in a row, my hands are fine. It’s my shoulders that start to ache! Why don't you do decor? That's a complicated question. I used to! Then I fully embraced being Mrs. B, and I'm far too busy as an entertainer. I still do balloon decoration in limited places and am grateful to them for allowing me to express my creativity on my schedule. Do I use special balloons? Yes and no. They are just standard, high-quality latex modeling balloons. However, I shop at specialty balloon shops to ensure I get the quality I demand. It's worth mentioning that I do use biodegradable balloons. They are 100% latex, made from the sap of a rubber tree. Do they dissolve? No. But they do degrade quickly. I've read it’s at about the rate of an oak leaf, but in my experience, they break down much faster. If you are curious about the science behind it all, I encourage you to check out www.pebausa.com/. I am also one of many balloon artists who does not support balloon releases. Litter is litter, whether it decomposes or not, and those ribbons take far longer to break down than a balloon ever will. Now let's twist!
